I write for the joy of writing. It never even occurred to me that I should publish until my beta readers and a local writers group here recommended I pursue it. My intent was just to write for myself and closest friends, making copies a stocking stuffer.

In truth, agents, and to some extent editors, are the subjective front end of a totally profit-driven industry at the top tiers. I give great credit to independent presses that are genuinely subjective, gut-driven, and clear about the standards of writing they will produce. Whether the profits at that level work for agents is a fair question.
