I was so struck by what Jo Morey said about the joy of the process, especially "connecting with readers whoβve found something meaningful in my words."
Thatβs the entire reason Iβm here on Substack. Iβm trying to find those exact readersβmy 'people.' Jo's search for an agent who "completely understood my vision" is exactly what I'm doing, just directly with readers.
My novel, "What Was Here," is a literary act of witness about a child in a Gaza camp who builds a 'Ministry' to archive his world as it's erased. Since your post is all about finding that perfect "click" and "vision" matchβwhether with an agent or a readerβI thought the story might resonate with your community.
After reading this article, I'd love to have Jo Morey on my podcast. Please DM me her details! I especially love how down-to-earth she is, as that's my favorite way to relax. And I especially love the scent of Palo Alto!
I really enjoyed Joβs interview too, and Iβm happy to hear that it resonated with you! You can reach out via her websiteβs contact form - https://jomorey.com/contact/
When you are sending out queryβs and you receive a nice enough looking decline email. How many times is this just a form letter and your project was not even looked at? Just wondering. I have received a few from different agents that read almost word for word the same.

This was really nice Alyssa! I felt really motivated to start writing and continue on my drafting journey.
Thatβs great! Iβm so glad to hear youβre feeling motivated!
This was helpful. Thank you.
Yup, well said...and sometimes we've got to put up a mirror to the tendencies and gravitational pull of hustling for attention....
Hopefully I have better luck querying than I have datingβ¦
